Prevention Strategies: Start During GLP-1 Therapy
The best time to address loose skin is before it becomes a significant problem. Here's what you can do while still on your GLP-1 journey:
Prioritize Slow, Steady Weight Loss
While GLP-1 medications are potent, work with your healthcare provider to aim for a weight loss rate of 0.5–1% of body weight per week. This pace allows your skin more time to gradually adapt. A 200-pound person should aim to lose 1–2 pounds per week at most.
Maintain Adequate Protein Intake
Protein is the building block of collagen and elastin. During active GLP-1 therapy, many patients struggle to eat enough protein because appetite is suppressed. Make protein a priority:
- Minimum: 0.8–1 gram of protein per kilogram of target body weight per day
- Ideal: 1.2–1.6 grams per kilogram for those engaged in resistance training
- Best sources: Lean meats, fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, legumes, protein supplements
Aim to spread protein intake across 3–4 meals rather than consuming it all in one sitting.
Stay Hydrated
Hydration is critical for skin health. Dehydrated skin is less pliable and less able to regenerate. Drink at least 8–10 glasses of water per day, and more if you're physically active or in a hot climate.
Take Collagen Peptides
Collagen peptide supplements have been shown in randomized controlled trials to improve skin elasticity, hydration, and dermal collagen density. A 2022 meta-analysis in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that oral collagen supplementation significantly improved skin elasticity and hydration compared to placebo.
Recommended dose: 2.5–10 grams of hydrolyzed collagen peptides daily. Look for Types I and III collagen, which are most abundant in skin.
Support with Vitamin C
Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis. Without adequate vitamin C, your body cannot properly build new collagen. Good sources include citrus fruits, bell peppers, strawberries, broccoli, and supplements.
Strength Training
Resistance exercise is one of the most effective ways to minimize loose skin because it builds muscle mass underneath the skin, providing underlying structure. Focus on:
- Progressive resistance training: 3–4 sessions per week
- Compound movements: Squats, deadlifts, bench press, rows, overhead press
- Slow twitch and fast twitch fibers: Include both high-rep/low-weight and low-rep/high-weight training
Even if loose skin is already present, building muscle can substantially improve appearance by filling in the space between skin and body.
