Sarcopenia is the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength that happens with aging and that can be accelerated by rapid weight loss. For people on GLP-1 agonist treatment, this is a real risk and deserves attention from the start of the protocol, not only when the problem is already present.

    What the Research Shows

Studies with people undergoing weight loss treatment show that part of the weight lost can include muscle mass, especially when the loss is significant and fast. The problem is that once lost, muscle mass is difficult to regain. Preventing it is easier than reversing it.

The risk is higher in people over 50, in those who already had little muscle mass before starting treatment, and in people following diets with very high caloric deficit without proper protein and exercise support.

Why Muscle Matters More Than Just Appearance

Muscle mass is not only about aesthetics or strength for carrying groceries. Muscle is the largest energy consumer in the body at rest. The more muscle mass you have, the higher your basal metabolism, meaning the more calories your body burns simply to exist.

When you lose muscle, your metabolism slows down. This means that after weight loss, eating the same amount of food that a person with more muscle mass eats results in faster weight regain. This is why many people regain the weight after stopping a weight loss treatment without having built muscle in the process.

Additionally, strong muscles protect against falls, especially in older people. A hip fracture after a fall can have serious and permanent consequences.

Symptoms of Muscle Loss You May Notice

It is not always easy to notice muscle loss in early stages. Some signs include weakness when climbing stairs or carrying weight that was previously comfortable, fatigue that does not improve with rest, and weight loss beyond what is expected on your tracking scale.

If you are losing weight too fast, especially more than 1 kg per week after the first few weeks, there is a chance that a significant part is not fat. This is a moment to adjust the strategy.

    How to Prevent Muscle Loss

Protein is the most important nutrient to maintain and build muscle. The general recommendation is 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day for people undergoing weight loss treatment. A person weighing 70 kg needs 84 to 112 grams of protein daily.

Good protein sources include chicken, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes like lentils and chickpeas, and tofu. Spreading protein intake throughout the day, including a protein source in each meal, is more effective than concentrating everything in a single meal.

Resistance exercise is the second pillar. Weight training, elastic band exercises, or bodyweight exercises like squats, push-ups, and lunges activate muscle protein synthesis and send the signal that muscle needs to be maintained.

    How PeptPro Helps You Track

PeptPro lets you log weight and week-by-week progress, with space for notes on how you are feeling physically. If you notice that you are losing strength or that fatigue has increased, you can record this in the app and bring it to your conversation with your doctor. Download here.

The app also organizes doses, injection sites, and side effect history alongside weight progress, making it easier to identify patterns. If rapid weight loss coincides with a period of low protein intake or reduced physical activity, the history shows that.

For people who want to track evolution more visually, the side-by-side photo feature in PeptPro lets you document changes in your body over weeks. Combined with weight and measurement data, you have a complete picture of progress that goes beyond the scale.

Protecting muscle mass during treatment is one of the most effective ways to ensure lasting results. Start tomorrow by assessing how much protein you are eating and consider adding a resistance training session to your routine.
