Metabolism is the sum of everything your body does to stay alive: breathing, digesting, maintaining temperature, circulating blood. Most of that happens even when you are completely still. It is called basal metabolic rate, and it accounts for 60 to 75 percent of everything you burn in a day. The rest comes from voluntary movement and digestion. Understanding how GLP-1 affects this helps explain why weight loss is not always linear.

    What GLP-1 Does to Metabolism

GLP-1 receptor agonists have a direct effect on how the body uses energy. Studies show that semaglutide and tirzepatide increase resting energy expenditure in some people, especially in the first weeks of use. This means the body burns more just by existing, on top of what it would normally burn.

At the same time, reduced appetite makes you eat less. If the increase in expenditure does not offset the reduction in intake, you enter a caloric deficit and weight loss occurs. That is the basic mechanism. The problem is that the body is adaptive. When you lose weight, basal metabolism drops along with it, because a smaller body needs less energy to function. That is normal and happens with any weight loss method.

The Effect of Lost Weight on Metabolism

When you lose 5 kilograms, your body needs less energy to carry that weight around. Muscles that are not being used as much can atrophy slightly if they are not stimulated. Fat that left the body took energy with it. The net result is that the body asks for less food than it did before, even if you do not feel hungrier. That is one reason weight loss slows down after the first few months.

GLP-1 does not stop this adaptive process, but it may blunt it. Some research suggests GLP-1 receptor agonists have independent thermogenic effects, meaning the body keeps burning more than the logic of weight loss alone would suggest. But this varies between individuals, and data are still being collected.

    How to Protect Your Metabolism

Maintaining or increasing muscle mass is the most effective way to keep metabolism active. Muscle consumes energy even at rest. The more muscle you have, the higher your basal expenditure. That does not mean becoming a bodybuilder. It means including some form of resistance exercise in your routine at least twice a week, and making sure you are eating enough protein to support that tissue.

Resistance exercises include free weights, machines, elastic bands, or even bodyweight movements. Squats, push-ups, and other compound movements work large muscle groups at once and are especially efficient for someone who is losing weight.

PeptPro lets you log your weight over time and follow the trend, not just the number on a given day. Weight fluctuates with fluid retention, hormonal cycles, and other factors that can mask real progress. The app also connects weight, dose, and exercise into a history you can bring to your appointment. Download here.

Beyond exercise, good sleep is fundamental for metabolism. People who sleep fewer than six hours a night tend to have a lower basal metabolic rate and more difficulty losing weight. The hormone that controls hunger, leptin, drops when you sleep poorly. At the same time, ghrelin, which sends the hunger signal, rises. Poor sleep makes you eat more and burn less, which works against your treatment.

In PeptPro you can also log sleep hours and see if there is a correlation with weight changes. If you notice your loss stalls during weeks when you slept poorly, that concrete data helps you talk to your doctor about strategies to improve rest. Check out the app here.

    What Does Not Work

Thermogenic supplements, excessive coffee, and prolonged fasting are not effective ways to raise metabolism in a lasting way. Coffee can give a short-term spike in energy expenditure, but the effect is small and disappears with regular use. Prolonged fasting triggers protective mechanisms in the body that lower metabolism even further as a response. Exercise and protein are the tools with the strongest evidence.
