What thermogenesis is

How GLP-1 interferes

GLP-1 agonists act on brain receptors that control not only appetite but also energy expenditure. Animal studies suggest that GLP-1 increases the activity of brown adipose tissue, which generates heat instead of storing fat. In humans, data is still being gathered.

What is known more clearly is that GLP-1 changes how the body responds to calorie restrictions. With traditional diets, metabolism slows when you eat less because the body interprets scarcity as a danger signal. GLP-1 appears to minimize this compensation mechanism.

In practical terms, this means that even while eating less, the body continues to spend a significant portion of the energy it used to burn. This is one of the reasons some people lose weight more steadily with GLP-1 than with conventional diets.

What the scale does not show

Weight is a single number that says nothing about composition. You may be losing fat while maintaining or even gaining muscle, especially if you do resistance exercise. In that case, the scale barely moves, but your body is changing.

The role of exercise
