What Happens in the Body

Symptoms to Recognize

Signs of reactive hypoglycemia typically appear one to three hours after a meal. They are not hard to identify, but it helps to distinguish them from other conditions.

Practical Prevention Strategies

Some dietary changes make a real difference. The first is choosing complex carbohydrates with fiber: brown rice instead of white, whole grain bread, tubers with skin, legumes. These foods raise glucose more gradually.

The second is never skipping meals. Regular, spaced meals prevent the body from going through long periods with no glucose available while insulin is still acting. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner with two snacks in between is a structure that works for many people.

The third is pairing carbohydrates with protein and fat at every meal. A slice of whole grain bread with eggs, or fruit with nuts, prevents carbohydrates from being absorbed too quickly.

For anyone who experiences frequent symptoms, it helps to keep a fast-acting carbohydrate source on hand for emergency use: a small juice box, three to four glucose tablets, or a banana.
