When you are losing weight with GLP-1, the scale shows a lower number each week. What the scale does not show is how much of that is fat and how much is muscle. If you are not paying attention to protein, some of what comes off when you step on the scale may be lean tissue. That matters because muscle is what keeps your metabolism running. When muscle decreases, your body burns fewer calories at rest, and weight loss gets harder over time.

The Role of Protein During Treatment

GLP-1 reduces appetite effectively. You eat less without having to try. That is great for weight loss, but it also means it is easier to miss important nutrients. Protein is the hardest nutrient to get in sufficient quantity when portions shrink, because it takes up space and requires more digestive work to process.

When your body is in a caloric deficit, it can break down muscle to get amino acids. That happens even with GLP-1. The only way to protect lean mass is to make sure you are getting enough protein every day. This is especially relevant for people who are already close to their goal weight or who have been losing weight for more than three months.

How Much Protein You Need

For people on GLP-1 therapy, the recommendation sits between 1.2 and 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. A person weighing 80 kilograms would need between 96 and 128 grams of protein daily. That is noticeably higher than typical intake.

Spreading protein across the day matters too. Your body can use only so much at one time for building and maintaining muscle. If you eat most of your daily protein at dinner, you are wasting some of the potential. The goal is to distribute it across three or four meals, with roughly 25 to 40 grams in each.

Practical Sources

Egg whites, chicken, fish, Greek yogurt, tofu, and legumes are solid options with good protein per serving. You do not need to spend a lot. Cooked lentils, beans, and chickpeas offer quality protein at a low cost. PeptPro has a meal scanner that helps estimate how much protein is in each dish, making it easier to stay on track without weighing everything. Check out the app here.

For people who struggle to get enough protein from whole food, a protein powder supplement can help fill the gap. But food should come first. Supplements are a complement, not a replacement.

Signs You Are Falling Short

Brittle nails, more hair loss than usual, fatigue that does not go away even with good sleep, and visible loss of muscle mass in the legs and arms are signs intake may be low. If you are losing weight quickly and noticing any of these symptoms, it is worth increasing protein before making any other changes.

In PeptPro you can log what you eat throughout the day and see how your nutrient distribution compares to what you need. The app keeps dose, meals, and history in one place, making it easy to review at any point. Download here.

Strategies That Work

Putting a protein source in every meal is the simplest method. At breakfast, eggs or Greek yogurt. At lunch, a portion of chicken or fish. At a snack, some legumes or cheese. At dinner, repeat the lunch logic. It does not need to be perfect. Doing this on most days makes a significant difference in preserving muscle mass during weight loss.

Keeping a log of what you eat, even for just one week, reveals patterns. Many people discover they eat protein irregularly, concentrated in one or two meals, while the others barely have any. Adjusting that is one of the most effective changes you can make for your body during treatment. Get started here.
